‘Lord of all he Surveys’

I have always appreciated ‘the great outdoors’ and walk in the countryside as much as my work allows.  I have a longstanding interest in wildlife and indeed part of my studies in Art College included wildlife illustration.  The red grouse is one of my favourite birds and is only found in wild moorland, an absolute joy to stumble across.  If fighter aircraft could fly like red grouse, jinking and skimming the heather at speed in high wind, they would be very difficult to shoot down.  My painting of a red grouse has a backdrop of open moorland overlooking the Weardale Valley around Stanhope.  I became an admirer of this proud bird when I travelled these moors on a regular basis.  I hope I have captured the majesty of his Lordship.
