I spend a lot of time in Bomber Country (Lincolnshire). I have tried to imagine the evenings when a ‘Big Raid’ was planned and how the sky might have looked at the time. Wartime veterans have described to me how the sky appeared black as it was filled with Lancs, forming over the Lincolnshire fields before heading to the assembly points on the Suffolk coast.
