My intention here was always to portray this machine in very fine detail, displaying the immense power and grace that the Lightning has always projected. Even on the ground, it gives an appearance of speed. My painting is of a Lightning in the ‘final letdown’ stage, needing bags of power to see it over the hedge. Landings were, in reality, controlled crashes. In fact many Lightning operators called it ‘the frightening’.
