This acrylic painting of an Avro Vulcan bomber depicts a time of increasing political tension between East and West. The Cold War period was a very tense time and regular scrambles took place in preparation for what was to become the Cuban missile crisis. Ever since attending summer camp with the Air Training Corps at RAF Coningsby, I was impressed with the mighty Vulcan, an aircraft that has become an icon for keeping the deterrent stable for many years. During my stay there the RAF informed us that if scrambled, and the alert aircraft did not return after an hour, we were to start digging a big hole and prepare for war. The oncoming thunderstorm in the picture reflects the gathering political storm, which engulfed the world on the threshold of nuclear war. |
